Is subclinical hypothyroidism a risk factor for gestational diabetes mellitus?

چکیده

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus is characterized by increased blood sugar that first appears during pregnancy. Multiple articles
have described a relationship between hypothyroidism/subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and rise in the risk of concomitant
pregnancy complications, including gestational (GDM), but effect SCH on uncertain the
literature. We clarified contribution to GDM development.
Patients Methods: conducted retrospective study. From patient records, 250 pregnant women who applied our
hospital for screening at 20-24 weeks had glucose tolerance tests were included our Retrospectively, all these pregnant
women’s first-trimester thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels recorded. created two groups according oral glucose
test (OGTT) results: case group diagnosed with control average glucose. Their first-trimester
TSH compared defined whether they euthyroid, subclinical (TSH=2.5-
 5.5mIU/L) or overt (TSH >5.5).
Results: 37 191 patients (19.4%) GDM. When we checked groups, mean was 1.8 mIU/L, 1.7 difference not statistically significant (p=0.121). 24.32%
(n=9) hypothyroidism/hypothyroidism; this rate as low as
 14.93% (n=28) non-GDM group, no statistical found (p=0.21).
Conclusion: It can be predicted other accompanying factors may primary determinant development rather
than hypothyroidism. Risk scales include trimester level should established of

The Relationship between Gestational Diabetes and Subclinical Hypothyroidism in Pregnancy: A Narrative Study

Introduction: Thyroid disorders and gestational diabetes are the most common endocrine disorders during pregnancy. Given the important role of thyroid hormones in glucose metabolism and homeostasis, it seems that thyroid disorders can have significant effects on glucose metabolism and insulin secretion and may contribute to gestational diabetes. This review aimed to investigate the association ...

Hypothyroidism and diabetes mellitus – a risky dual gestational endocrinopathy

Objectives. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypothyroidism are each associated with increased rate of pregnancy complications. However, their combined morbidity during gestation is poorly studied. Therefore, the aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of the combined morbidity of DM & hypothyroidism and whether it is associated with adverse maternal and neonatal outcome. Study design. Th...

Gestational diabetes mellitus

Introduction: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. The prevalence range from 1 to 14% of all pregnancies, depending on the population studied and the diagnostic tests employed. Risk assessment for GDM should be undertaken at the prenatal visit. Women with clinical characteristics of GDM should und...

Is autoimmune thyroid dysfunction a risk factor for gestational diabetes?

OBJECTIVE Some recent studies have related autoimmune thyroid dysfunction and gestational diabetes (GD). The common factor for both conditions could be the existence of pro-inflammatory homeostasis. The study objective was therefore to assess whether the presence of antithyroid antibodies is related to the occurrence of GD. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty-six pregnant women with serum TSH levels ≥...

Dietary Risk Factors for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

G estational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common medical problems found in pregnancy. Categorizing a woman as having GDM with a glucose tolerance test (GTT) identifies the top 5–10% of a continuum of risk for certain adverse pregnancy outcomes. Women with GDM are themselves very likely to ultimately develop type 2 diabetes. In addition, the offspring of women with GDM have a great...
